Food Waste

Approximately 1/3 of the world's total agricultural land is used to grow food that ends up wasted. As the world's population continues to grow, the challenge is to feed more people with food that is already produced and wasting less food, rather than just growing more food. food-waste.jpg

What can we do to reduce our food waste?

Plan ahead! Buying what you need for planned meals will cut back on unnecessary food purchases. The average family could save approximately $370 PER PERSON a year by reducing food waste and planning appropriately.

Get creative with leftovers! Not everyone enjoys eating the same exact meal multiple days in a row. Use the same food, but switch it up with various spices and add in a few other ingredients. Freeze what you don't eat and heat it up at a later time.

Use differently-shaped vegetables and produce in soups or other meals. Foods that are not the most attractive doesn't mean they are bad or not nutritious!

And when you do have food that goes bad (it happens to all of us), COMPOST it, rather than dump it in your trash to be sent to a landfill. The average home could divert approximately 330 lbs. of food waste a year by adopting home composting!

Curious how much food you may be unknowingly wasting? Be more mindful with your food purchases to reduce your food waste. Keep a journal to track what and how much food goes to waste in your household. Start home composting (pictured here).
